I believe 3/32” rod is the ideal rod for this unit, instead of the 3/16” rod thats typically supplied [in some kits].
I’ll report back if this welder takes a dump on me & dies an early death—— so far, so good ✔️
Tip:
buy some 3/32” rod, 6011 or 6013, (for thus welder, 3/32” is better for this welder than 3/16”rod) and also a 10ga extension cord, especially if you’re gifting this to a person, as the cord attached to the welder is rather short— chances are, the person is going to need an extension cord: 10 gauge = no worries of over-loading the cord/electrical circuit

I mainly wanted something I could keep close by for quick fixes without dragging out my bigger setup. I have used it on a couple of brackets and a broken steel frame so far. For that kind of work it is just much more convenient. Plug it in, clamp the piece and get the repair done.

I was honestly expecting it to feel more like a novelty tool, but it surprised me. I repaired a small gate hinge and then used it on a metal stand in the shop. It took me a few minutes to get comfortable with it, but after that it was straightforward. I would use my larger machine for heavy work, but for these small jobs this is exactly what I wanted.

Most of the welding I do is fixing something that cracked or came loose, not building an entire project from scratch. That is where this makes sense for me. I used it on a fence support and a small cart frame and both repairs came out fine. It is quick to carry outside and I am not wasting time setting up more equipment than the job actually needs.

I hardly ever give 5 stars but this portable welder really surprised me in what it could do! For what it is it really is worth the money, as a logger we have stuff crack and break alot so alot of times if we need a welder we have to call a guy to come weld and most of the times its hrs or even days before we can get someone to come out there, this thing has gotten us by several times no longer than i have had this welder and it welds really well. And yes it will weld with 7018 welding rods.

I've never welded, so after reading reviews, I thought I'd give this one a try. The more I practice, the better it's getting. I think that this welder is great bang for the buck and could produce great results for the more experienced. For me, as a novice - like I said, my welds are steadily improving. (We won't talk about how many times I've stuck the rod, but that's just me learning!) Overall, I'm very pleased with this purchase. If I had to come up with one minor nit - I wish the ground cable was longer. For me, great purchase!
